PW Gives What Darkness Brings a Starred Review

This is nice!

From Publishers Weekly:

"A murder case complicates Sebastian St. Cyr's recent marriage in Harris's excellent eighth Regency mystery (after 2012's When Maidens Mourn): the accused, former privateer Russell Yates, is the husband of Kat Boleyn, St. Cyr's long-time love interest, for whom he still pines. Yates is charged with the fatal shooting of diamond merchant Daniel Eisler at the merchant's London house. Yates, who had an appointment with Eisler, claims he heard a pistol shot at the door before rushing inside and finding the merchant dead in the parlor, where Eisler's nephew discovered him crouching over the body. St. Cyr learns that the unscrupulous Eisler tried to sell a large blue diamond that had been one of the French Crown Jewels, but that disappeared in 1792. The combination of complex back story, intricate plotting, surprising developments, and poignant evocations of the lives of the underpriviledged makes this one of the best entries in Harris's superior historical series." I am supposed to be doing an interview this week with PW, too, so more on that soon.

Huzzah! Three cheers! I happily anticipate the release of 'Darkness' ... I go over and over in my mind what I know about Sebastian and Hero ...

Ms. Harris,
OMG, congrats to you and so most deserving! What a thrill it must be for you--more publicity and acclaim for your books, more readers! Your star power just keeps increasing! Good news for all of us "victims"--I mean readers (what we already know), as we anxiously await for What Darkness Brings. Any news yet of the possible ARC give away?
(PS, over the holidays my son brought home a new friend from college, and his name was....... you guessed it-Sebastian! The first one I have ever met. (In my mind), the young fellow had a lot to live up to, even before we met him-LOL!)

Ohhh! Can't wait. An elderly relative who actually knew a family member born in the early years of the 19th century (both of them obviously long-lived) sent me a packet of family information last week. It's been fascinating to read about younger sons being sent to Cambridge to study for the Church, or off to the colonies (Canada), and of titled family members involved in Parliament and international diplomacy, etc. Brings history alive, although without nearly as much romance as your books.

Congratulations. What a way to ring in the new year. I think the phrase "Harris's superior historical series" is quite apt. The suggestions that it is one of the best in the series leaves me with palpitations!!! When is this thing being released, again? I cannot wait!

Congrats! It is always nice to see when the reviewers get it right ;-0
Starting the countdown. Let us know when your interview happens. Sabena

Barbara, not long now!

LOgalinOR, thanks! Editors always getting excited about starred PW reviews, so I must admit I really like getting them. The ARC give away has hit a hiccup, but hopefully we can get organized. I must admit, I don't think I've ever met a Sebastian.

Liz, that sounds like fascinating reading. What fun!

Paz, thank you! And yes, there are some lovely phrases in there! The release date is 5 January.

Sabena, the interview was tonight, but I'm not sure when the article resulting from it will be up.

Courtney, thanks!

Very nice! Congrats on that.

For the release date, you meant to write March 5, right? At least we now know that you are as anxious as the rest of us. LOL

Congrats Candy. I recommend this series to everyone! I have been counting down to March 5 and will need to make sure I do not schedule any meetings or anything important at work on March 6 because I will be up all night on the 5th.

Thanks, Charles.

Paz, Oops! Yes, MARCH. Thank you!

Anon, thank you!

That is just wonderful, it'd great to see you're getting the recognition you deserve. I prophesy the day is coming soon when you can control your own durn book covers.

Ms. Harris,
I have a 'delicate' dilemma on my hands. My husband's birthday is March 5th.....hmmm, what to do(?), depending on when THE BOOK arrives....to start reading, and then....have to stop....argh!
I've had another Sebastian encounter, but one you would not expect. I'm a compounding pharmacist and my work is located in the suburbs of Portland, in big horse country. Picture--wide pastures, rolling hills, white fences, not unlike Kentucky. Our patients are not only humans, but also cats, dogs, and horses. We see scripts for horses with the perennial names, such as "Shiloh", "Misty", "Spirit", "Dusty", "Champ" etc., but the other day we received a new horse patient.....named, "Sebastian"!! LOL!
PS, we have one horse named "Rambo"---I can only imagine what he's like, LOL!

cs harris said...

Jan, that would indeed be heaven!

LOgalinOR, I'm so sorry! At least this won't happen next year! And I must say, I think Sebastian is a wonderful name for a horse.

Love the review which you richly deserve. One quibble: Sebastian does not "pine." Please.
