He What?

So the art department was getting ready to do the photo shoot for the cover of #11, WHEN FALCONS FALL, and they went to book the same male model they used for WHY KINGS CONFESS, WHO BURIES THE DEAD, and the new cover of WHAT ANGELS FEAR. And they were told....

He's gone. He joined the Navy.

Oh, dear. To be frank, he never looked like Sebastian to me. I still like the KINGS cover, but not so much the way he looks in the other two. Now they're scrambling to find someone who sort of looks like him. I said, "Can't we just get someone who looks good?"

And maybe, just maybe, can you let me help pick him?

So far, I haven't received an answer on that.

In other news, here's another great review of WHO BURIES THE DEAD, this one from RT.

And the good reviews keep coming in...

Despite being firmly in Sebastian's camp when it comes to views of war, I nevertheless wish the erstwhile Sebastian model the best of luck in his new journey. Safe and uplifting travels!

And finally, I am already on record about how the Sebastian in my head is not like anyone I have actually seen in real life, and how I really like it that way. However... what the heck. Let's have some fun. I vote for someone that looks like this

I think that the model actually looked a little bit like the guy in the first picture (he he)

Paz, ah, yes; for a young Colin Firth! The truth is, the Sebastian in my head doesn't look like anyone I've ever seen, either.

I'm with Paz with regard to your model...but since he's off to see the world maybe Colin Firth's younger brother is available...yes, he really has one who looks a great deal like him. Never mind - he lives in England, too. Like you, Candy, I like the King's cover but still like the mystery of the back view as it leaves a bit to our imagination. That said, as long as the hat fits...:)! (Stop laughing.)

Not my image of Sebastian either but I generally don't pay that much attention to cover images.

Lynne, maybe we could make it a requirement that the hat needs to fit the new model? I suspect they only have one hat.

Charles, that's because you know how little control most authors have over covers!

Goodness, that is surprise! I hope this time they listen to you and you have more input.

Ooooh, I like it! Something like this: "If the hat fits, young man, the job is yours. Otherwise...there's the door." Maybe I have a future in the publishing industry. Then again...:)

Well at least that's fitting for a Sebastian model. Joining the military. But i have to admit that i also don't know of anybody living that looks like the the Sebastian in my head. same with Hero. its that handsome but not pretty look that's hard to come by.

and i hope you do get some vote in this. But i have seen a lot worse choices than the young on the cover on Why Kings Confess. the best news are the great reviews! so happy for you. only 21 more days!
best, Ali

I must admit that the cover model never looked like my mental image of Sebastian either. His face seemed too rugged. I still think Tom Mison would make a good Sebastian...and he's British! Toby Stephens (son of Maggie Smith) would've been great a few years ago but he's past Sebastian's book age.

Hopefully they'll give you some say in who the next cover model is. I'm not sure why they wouldn't but what do I know?

Every review just makes me want to get my hands on this book all the more. I'm going to try really hard to savor this one and not devour it all in one sitting. No promises though. *wink*

Suzanne, I haven't heard a thing so I guess they decided they don't need my input.

Lynne, I'm not sure they'd know if the hat fit, or not!

Ali, I recently heard my editor's choice for the actor to play Sebastian and I was stunned. I suspect we each see him differently.

Veronica, yes, someone else suggested Mison. I don't think I've seen him in anything.

I have always had rather an elusive image of Sebastian 'in my head' so to speak and now this topic has cropped up it has given me pause for thought. To my shame I had never heard of Tom Mison before reading the posts and since 'googling' him have to agree that he would make a wonderful Sebastian. I found this set of photographs (the monochrome is rather gorgeous :-) http://imgkid.com/tom-mison-ichabod-crane.shtml.
Also it's a disgrace that you have no input regarding the model used, especially as you created his character! Jan...

Jan, I rarely know the actors are when readers start discussing who would make a good Sebastian. I'd never heard of him, either.

At least Sebastian doesn't look like an American porn star on the covers of your books! Spare a thought for some of the other unfortunate Regency period novelists. I just got one of Mary Balogh's 'Survivors' series, 'The Escape', and the cover is so tasteless. I wish I had waited for the British publication of it to come out later!

Susan, yes, romance covers can be really cringe-inducing. I don't know why publishers do that, but I can only assume it's because they help sell the books.

So glad I'm not the only one who rarely recognises names of present day actors :-) My era is more Clark Gable, James Mason and Gregory Peck etc. lol. Although most 'recent' period drama actors such as Hugh Bonneville, Colin Firth, James McAvoy, Rupert Everett are easily recalled as I'm a Period Drama addict! :-)
I so agree about the 'porn star' book covers as I've read quite a few books sporting muscle bound 'porn star' coverings and have to skip glimpsing the cover on each 'pick up' as they are so bad. I like my 'rakes' to look as they are described in most 'Period books' with understated clothing of the finest quality and fit, tailoring at its absolute pinnacle, character with a physique and manner to match, but will accept hair just a fraction too long and rakish! The present Sebastian is a very fine example! lol.
I also find full blown 'modern' female face make-up a bit of a sticking point on some Georgian/Regency covers. I understand that 'make-up' was worn back then but I'm sure that it didn't look quite as '1960s' as it does on some of the covers I've come across in the past. Jan...

moon-gazing-hare: James Mason, now you're talking! I loved him in the 1940's British films, like 'The Man in Grey' and 'The Seventh Veil'. I think the trouble is, so many modern actors are just not from the right era, they have been too well fed and do not have the required lean look. Too many years of junk food I'm afraid. Rupert Everett is a bit too gay, sadly.

Moon-gazing, I could never understand the attraction of Fabio. Too many muscles and a really, really dumb look on the face.

Susan, all I can say is, yes.
