Australia on My Mind

**
I had planned a new post about books made into movies, but the news coming out of Australia this morning about the flooding that is now engulfing Brisbane was simply too horrible for me to ignore. A big chunk of my heart will always call Australia home. When I left Australia for New Orleans ten years ago now in order to be here for my aging mother, I literally cried all the way from Adelaide to Sydney. I'm crying now. Australia is a land endlessly beset by fire and flood. Fortunately, it is also populated by an incredibly resilient, hearty people who know how to put things right.

My thoughts are with you...

Yes, after years of drought, we finally got good rain which soaked into the parched ground and filled the dams. The problem is, the ground is now sodden and the dams overflowing, and the rain doesn't seem to want to stop.
We had floods in this district a few weeks ago (though I wasn't personally affected), but the scale in Queensland now is staggering.
Thanks for thinking of us.

I checked in with my friend in Queensland today, and the water came a meter from entering the house, but in her words, she wasn't hit that badly.

Between the floods and the Melbourne fires a couple years ago, they've had some big disasters. But you're right -- they're a resilient, hardy people. I still miss it down there, poisonous fauna, dramatic natural disasters, and all.

I've been watching it on the news and worrying. Fingers crossed the waters start receding soon!

Thank you for your concern Candy.
It is appalling what is happening here. After the 10 years of drought we have had in Victoria we are now being inundated with water. The floods in Queensland seem to be almost of biblical propotions, sometimes too frightening to even contemplate. I move shortly to your part of the world but, leave behind a rather large chunk of myself here in Australia!!

Lesley, I don't understand why this isn't getting more media attention here in the States.

Jessica, lets hope the water rises no farther at your friend's house. And yes, I miss it dreadfully, too--although not the brown snakes and big jumping spiders (although they do make for good stories)!

Orannia, does it seem to you that the world is having more floods lately?

Firefly, suppose there is some consolation in the ending of the drought.

Thanks Candy as an Aussie we appreciate your thoughts

I am From Victoria, Heard today that the size of the affected area was about the size of NSW,another way they have put it is That one fifth of our country has been flooded, several places for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. Along with the tragedies we are hearing about some amazing rescues & resilience of the human spirit

I've been following it on the news. Horrendous. The Australians have long been hardy and resiliant, though. As you say.
