Happy Birthday, Scout and Banjo!

Okay, so it probably isn't really their birthday. But when we took them to our vet at the beginning of October, she said they were at least six months old, so we decided to make 1 April their birthday. It seemed appropriate, since Mother Nature played a rather nasty trick on these two little sweethearts.

Reaching today with both kittens alive and (relatively) well feels like a grand achievement. When we first rescued them, I was determined to give them at least six months of being warm, dry, well-fed, and safe, to make up for the first six months of their lives, which were pretty wretched. I don't think I ever showed this to you, but this is the photo my daughter sent of the two kittens on the patio outside her apartment that made me decide I had to do SOMETHING:

At the time of their rescue, they weighed barely a pound each. Banjo is now five pounds, and Scout isn't far behind him. And since the above image is too awful to leave you with, here's a picture of Banjo getting his neck massaged, which he dearly loves:

What a couple of sweethearts. You're all fortunate that your life paths crossed. It's very evident that Banjo and Scout are well loved.

Glad that the kitties are doing well. I love the Lion King motif in the background of the first photo.

Awwwww, those pictures!!! Specially the one were the kitty is clearly just loving the loving he's getting LOL.

And you have inspired me. When I see the picture of how you found them, I do have to ask myself: how did you know they did not have any contagious-to-human diseases? I admit it would not be a question I would have asked myself with a dog. I am certainly more familiar with dogs, but I have also heard lots of stories of stray cats creating health problems for humans. I know I would have shied away from helping them. But you obviously knew better. I think I am off to find out more about helping stray cats.

Oh that picture of them as skin and bones almost is heartbreaking.

Veronica, they are indeed.

Barbara, thank you.

Elaine, that crib bumper was made just for them!

Paz, I'll admit I both worried and hesitated. But my daughter also sent videos of them shaking, and I found CH quickly on the Google.

Charles, I know, I still can barely stand to look at it. They were six months and only weighed ONE pound!

Oh, those poor babies! That photo ... it just breaks my heart. They are so lucky to have you and your family in their corner, Candy, and what a beautiful, happy pair they are now.

Off to give my two boy cats a big hug ...

Thanks for sharing pics. They are so lucky to have found you and Steve. Not many would put forth all the effort and hard work. They look adorable, healthy (as can be) and happy. Such sweethearts. Hope the rest of the menagerie is also fairing well. Sabena

Lynn, it really is a shock to remember just how skinny they were.

Rachel, they do remind one not to take anything for granted.

Sabena, everyone else is still hanging in there--although Angel still hates his special food and medicine and is convinced we hate him.

They are so beautiful. They were really blessed when they came into your orbit. I hope they continue to get better.

OMG, the first and last picture are way too cute! The one in the middle, sadly--not so much. Bless both you and Steve for opening your (huge) hearts and home to them. Banjo and Scout are not only alive, but obviously thriving as well. It shows how the spirit (both human and animal) can rebound and live, if surrounded by love and nurturing. Your compassion has been blessed with all that feline love in return. The last photo says it all.

Suzanne, the heartbreaking thing is that they seem to be slipping. So nurturing them is bittersweet.

LOgalinOR, thank you. I have learned so much from these two little guys.

C- wow they are so changed by what you have done for them. you could weep at how they looked before. it takes a special kind of person to do what you and and your family have done. many would not. you know they're thinking - we hit lotto! great job! best ali

Sorry to see your comment that their health seems to be slipping. You've certainly given the best possible lives they can have! Sometimes that's all you can do, that and treasure them while you have them.

Poor little babies. That is very sad. I shall be keeping them in my prayers.

Ali, when ever Banjo is having trouble and I say, "You just can't catch a break, can you little guy?" Steve says, "He caught one big one!"

Sherry, that's one of the lessons they are teaching me--and one I need to learn.

Suzanne, the good thing is I don't think they realize that their abilities are going downhill. They are still very happy little guys.
