Progress

I've spent the past week organizing my computer files (and I'm still at it!), trying to reconcile my outdated backup with what the Rent-a-Nerd guy managed to salvage. By far the biggest hit was to my iPhotos: out of over 6,000 photos, he managed to salvage just 268. Ouch. So I've been organizing the files from the old backup, looking at old camera cards in the hopes that things like my daughters' graduations last year (med school and MA) are still there, and hitting up family members for their photos.

I've made some interesting discoveries along the way, such as the above picture of me with Tracy Grant at Bouchercon in 2010; I misplaced the camera after my trip to San Francisco and found it so long after the fact that I never did anything with the pictures I'd taken. I also found this old scan of me on a dig on San Juan Island in the 70s. I look like a child.
And I was thrilled to discover this great photograph of my mother at a Mardi Gras parade, age 92, taken just weeks before she died:

I'm afraid I haven't been spending much time with Sebastian, though, except for three hours while waiting at the orthopedist the other day with a lateral meniscus tear, and the hour I spent at the vet's with Huckleberry. Yes, Huck is not well again. I'm really worried about my baby....

C- wow - that's a lot of pictures! Good luck in your search. I love the one of you at the dig. I hope you found something good after all that labor. Sebastian will have to understand - he's had some trauma in his life too. And not to mention injury. Although he doesn't have to wait 3 hours to see his doctor. I’m so sorry to hear about Huckleberry. It’s a cat epidemic at your house. He really makes me think of Hero's cat. That expression is priceless. Good luck with everything! I will say a prayer for Huck. Best, Ali

Wow. That's a lot of pictures. I recently (somehow) lost about 300 pictures from my phone. No idea how that happened but I was pretty bummed about it. Some of them I had uploaded to FB but most are now gone forever.

Love the picture of your mom. That was a nice suprise.

And I'm sure Sebastian has his hands full, what with a newborn in the house. He probably doesn't mind a few days off from murderous adventures. *grin*

P.S. I think the Sy Cyr cat needs a name. ;)

Ali, I don't know why all my cats seem to get sick at once. They did this last fall. Now we're afraid Huck's toxoplasmosis last fall hit his heart.

Veronica, his name comes in WHO BURIES THE DEAD. You'll see why it had to wait.

I've heard of that problem with pictures before; I wonder if it has something to do with how they are stored. I need to back up our pictures pronto.

Great picture of you in the dig. Made me look up some of my own while I was in college. Whats funny about pictures of archeological digs is that they they seem timeless... because the styles and the equipment often stay the same LOL

Your mother's portrait is striking. The composition, her expression, those beads, all make quite a statement. That is another type of archeological find, perhaps the best kind.

Well, my friend, you and I seem to be traveling in a parallel universe this week...I turned my computer off last Friday night and on Sat. morning it would not turn on. It had a broken power connection - which according to the computer guy is the hardest thing to repair because it was sealed. So we traveled the same path this week - I had to find a new one. Something out of the Twilight Zone, Candy..... I was a bit luckier than you; my data was all transferable but I'm looking at Win.8 and it's so different that I feel a bit lost. And like you, I now have the portable hard drive on the desk. I love technology but when I get comfortable I hate change. Ah, well...
The picture are great...nice to see you and Tracy having fun. And your Mom looks to be a very grand lady:).

Sometimes things like this make us look at pics again. I'm sorry you lost so many, though. Glad you saved these.

You look very hip in your 70's gear. How it takes me back! It looks like late 70's though, no flares! I envy you being able to take part in digs. You looked much more glamourous than the Time Team people do, but I suppose being in England, they would be more likely to be covered in mud!
Your mother looks so nice, how lucky you are to have such treasured family memories.

Paz, I have so very few photographs of me in college. Pre-cell phone days, I suppose.

Lynne, oh, no! I'm so sorry. And this business of learning a new system has made me resolve to go back to upgrading regularly every 3 years, so that stuff doesn't change so much.

Charles, it's so ironic that what I lost was my photos, because they're so important to me.

Susan, it's actually early 70s. Shrink-to-fit men's 501 Levi's--best for digging because they were rugged and had boot-cut legs. And some day I'll have to talk about the dig I did in a swamp. Talk about mud!

Hi Candy - sometimes you can take the hard-drive to recovery specialists and they can do a better job at recovering things. It is pricey (several hundred dollars) but they may be able to salvage more of the pics than your normal IT folks. Just a thought. Sabena

Oh, I hit enter to fast. Wanted to wish the best to Huck and hoping he'll once more make a wonderful recovery. Take care. Sabena

Whatever type of jeans, you looked very nice in them. I do like your blog, by the way, it's so friendly and the people who take part seem so nice. I originally went on it because I was annoyed about how many British soldiers were baddies in your novels and wanted to express an opinion, but I've come to like your blog very much for it's own sake. You seem to be a very nice, genuine person and you attract like minded people to your blog.

Sabena, I did pay nearly a couple of hundred to the outfit I took it to. Some of the photos were actually half there--like an old real of negatives accidentally expose to the light. It was really weird. And Huck does seem a bit better today, so I am cautiously optimistic. Perhaps catching his heart problem now will help extend his life--if I can figure out a way to get the CoQ10 down him!

Susan, oh, to look like that in jeans now! And thank you. I really didn't realize I was beating up on army officers so much--they just make great villains or suspects because they have both the ability and the experience of killing, and because I suspect war in those days tended to unhinge a lot of men.

And that should have been reel, not real. Sigh.

It seems the mental suffering for soldiers still continues. I watched a disturbing documentary last year about how many young men from the British army have come back from Afghanistan and committed suicide as a result of untreated Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It ran into hundreds! The army seem to want to brush it all under the carpet, while these poor young men are left to suffer, not to mention the effect their changed personalities have on their families.

cs harris said...

Susan, we have the same problem here. My daughter is a psychiatrist in the Air Force and works with men and women from all branches. It's awful, and I suspect is always has been.

Susan J. said...

At least the people that your daughter works with are getting some kind of treatment. Many of the former British soldiers in the documentary I watched were written off once they had left the army. It made me so angry, particularly as they are most likely to come from less privilaged backgrounds in the first place, recruited from places where employment in scarce. I expect this is the case for many ordinary soldiers in America also.

cs harris said...

Susan, I've read the statistics on the number of homeless people who are vets, and it's scary.

Susan J. said...

Yes, many homeless here are from the army. God, it's so sad. Why is life so cruel?
