Girls Who Read

A lovely poem to bring a smile to the hearts of girls who read...

Of course, it also goes the other way!

Cat Update:

First, the good news: Huck is through his nasty four week course of antibiotics and is getting better (and feistier) every day. As for everyone else, Angel has decided we don't love him anymore because we only give him tasteless food to eat and shove medicine down his throat every night; we've decided to let nature take its course with Baby, whom we're hoping still has some good months ahead; Thomasina will be going back to the vet soon for more tests; and the kittens... Well, the kittens have unfortunately suffered what looks like permanent neurological damage from a bad reaction their shots and need to be hand fed and given physical therapy daily. I don't have a life, I have sick cats...

  1. Sounds like you definitely have your hands full. One day at a time, right? Glad to hear Huck is bouncing back.

I echo "wow". What a time for you. Great about Huck. Here's hoping Thomasina and Angel's last time with you is comforting and painless. My heart breaks for the kittens. I was worried since we hadn't heard from you in a while that things for all concerned had taken a turn for the worst. What a tough life they have already had. I hope their quality of life improves or at least balances out to become stable, and with it yours as well. Lastly, thanks for the poem. I'm going to share it at our Mother-Daughter meeting this month. Trying to instill the right values into 12-13 year old girls and that looking a certain way isn't what it is all about. It is a good one to help in that message. Please take care and get some rest when you can. Definitely go out to dinner at Thanksgiving!!!Sabena

Let's be more specific - you have an "old folk's home" for cats - bless their furry little souls. The poem was abslutely great! Oh, if there were only more men like that... Glad Huck is improved.

  5. The picture of the kittens doing their physical therapy is adorable! Did you make their equipment or did it come from the vet? I've never seen those before. Glad to hear everyone is doing better : )

  6. Candice---you have been busy, oh my! "Assisted care facility" for cats and kitties-full time and long term. Definitely a labor of (selfless) love. The contraption you rigged for the kitties is priceless. I have to admit that shots and vaccines(side effects) scare the heck out of me, and I'm a pharmacist. Glad to hear that Huck has another life left in him. Poor Angel, must be mewing "bloody hell" or something equivalent, due to his current conditions. Your 'Thomasina' brings back fond memories of watching Hayley Mills and Thomasina, Disney movies back from the 60's. Does anybody else remember them? PS, absolutely LOVED the video about the "girls who read"-sent it to my 20 year old son-LOL!

  7. Hmmmn … I'm thinking that, maybe, you should read poetry to your cats ;0 There's Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," maybe Blake's "Tiger, Tiger" to get them up and roaring. However whimsical this comment sounds, I do wish you and all your lovely felines the best. They purr their way into your soul and it's tough to see them suffer. Oh, and the poem is absolutely wonderful. It will be making the rounds.

  8. Very sorry about all your cat problems. I do love that poem though. And my girl reads.

  9. JustWingingIt, yes, one day at a time. It's the only way to survive this.

    Helena, thanks.

Sabena, these kittens are breaking my heart. They are so sweet and loving, but I want to cry when I look into the future.

    Imhess, yes, definitely!

Amy, Steve made them, although he was inspired by a video I found on YouTube.

  10. LOgalinOR, yes, I'm going to be a wreck next time I have to vaccinate my pets, since it was the shots that also made Huck's sick by setting off an old toxoplasmosis infection (by lowering his immune system). And Thomasina's name was indeed inspired by the Disney film (I'd planned to have a Tom and Huck, but then Danielle fell in love with this calico female, so we had to make a few changes). I recently watched it, and it was every bit as good as I remembered.

    Barbara, thank you.

Charles, I thought you'd like it!
