While researching immigrant populations in London the other day, I stumbled across this rather fascinating (and short) film clip showing traffic on Blackfriars Bridge in 1896. That's 70+ years after the end of the Regency period, but it's still a good reminder of just how slow life was in the days before the adoption of the automobile. Many of the wagons are only moving at the same pace as the walkers.
And wouldn't you like to know what is in the newspaper that boy is walking along reading?

Sorry about the barrage of spammers that you have to deal with. It must be quite annoying-is there anything you can do to avoid them? Don't forget it was a full moon, coincidence?
Love it. It's the same year my grandmother was born--I recognize the mutton-chop sleeves from family photos. Having been raised by my grandparents and my great-aunt, all of them born in the early 1890s, I was fortunate enough to experience a bit of that slower paced life. Too bad that it didn't serve to teach me to cope with the 21st century!

ReplyDeleteThe spammers are something else. They do ruin it for everyone. Though at times they kind of can be hilarious. Did you ever think your work was fastidious (ooh, is that a noob?) And whod've thunk you'd become tech savvy by drinking kosher oj?!

ReplyDeleteGreat film clip. Loved the one guy who turns around to stare at the camera with the "what in the heck are you doing" look. The link then led me through several other clips of first photos and such. I love going down bunny trails. And, what is with all the spammers? It's gotten so bad. Thanks for persevering and keeping on posting for those of us that like to keep up with you/your writing. Sabena

agree -things were slower and people were much better dressed. but the boy with newspaper reminds me of everybody today who walks and reads their phones with the same intensity. here in NYC it scares me to death. at least he wasnt crossing the street which is what they do here!
