We don't often see photos of New Orleans decked out for Christmas. So come with me, and let's go for a stroll. We'll start with St. Louis cathedral and Jackson Square, the heart of the city in the days when we were a French and Spanish colony:
Then we'll cross the street and climb over the levee to the Mississippi River, where the steamboat, the Natchez, is decked out for the holidays.
While we're down in the Quarter, we might as well pop over toward Bourbon Street...
And, not too far away, on the Uptown side of Canal, is the old Fairmont Hotel. Now the Roosevelt, it's long been famous in New Orleans for its elaborate Christmas decorations (it's also a lovely hotel, if you're ever looking for someplace to stay).
Finally, let's hop on the Canal streetcar and head out to City Park for Celebration in the Oaks. It's nothing like what it used to be before Katrina, but still a fun stop. And while you're there, don't forget to visit the Cajun Papa Noel...
I'm almost ready for Christmas, and hope to get some pictures of my tree and villages up soon. How about you? If you celebrate, are you ready?

I love it that the powers that be have reintroduced the Canal Street streetcar--I remember riding it with my grandfather when I was very small. I learned to read from looking at the advertisements above the seats!
We were watching a movie last night that was filmed partially at City Park. I saw the houses that they decorate for Christmas. We used to do Christmas in the Oaks every year.
Lovely, but very different from our cold weather Xmas. We usually go skating (outdoors) on Christmas Day.
Oh for a beignet and petit noir at Cafe du Monde. And the 'gator sleigh is a riot!
Happy holidays everyone.
We are mostly done - Hanukkah has been celebrated; brisket and latkes and even the leftovers are all gone. Looking forward to Christmas at our friends' houses. I was raised Catholic and part of me misses the tree in the house and early morning mass (in German) but part of me loves having it all done and getting to celebrate at someone else's house. It is much more relaxed for me, since most of the cooking and wrapping, etc is done. I've never been to New Orleans. It is on my list of places I really want to visit. Someday..... Hope you have a great Christmas. Sabena
Kathy, Yes, I think it was a wonderful idea to put it back.
Charles, I still miss the way is was pre-Katrina.
Liz, very different! Although we have had a white Christmas once since I've lived here.
Jan, happy holidays!
Sabena, Steve and I have already decided that the first year the girls are gone, we're going someplace else for Christmas. He votes for Hawaii, I want Williamsburg. And Happy Hanukkah!
Ms. Harris,
Love the 'gators pulling Santa-what a hoot-LOL,and yes, the rest of New Orleans looks nicely decked out in all its' holiday finery. Wish everyone a terrific New Year as we eagerly anticipate What Darkness Brings.
Would also like to wish you and all your readers an "Oregon Christmas" (to the tune of 'Partridge in a Pear Tree')--Twelve Pinot grapes growing, Eleven Ducks and Beavers battling (college football), Ten Portland bridges spanning, Nine Cascade peaks glistening, Eight Dungeness crabs sidestepping, Seven windsurfers a-gliding, Six rivers a-rafting, Five golden ales, Four leaping Steelhead, Three soggy skiers, Two mossy lawns, and.......a Spotted Owl in a Doug Fir Tree.
