Sigh...

The timing of this one is particularly lousy, since it's expected to make landfall on the seventh anniversary of a certain, memorable event. I tried a couple of days ago to compose my annual Katrina post. In preparation, I reread my past years' musings and was rather stunned to find myself sitting at my computer and sobbing. Obviously, I'm not as "over" it all as I thought I was.

Fortunately, Isaac is only expected to come ashore here as a Cat 2, although a rather wide, nasty one. And it's so disorganized and unpredictable that it may well go in someplace else. But, just in case, we spent the day closing our fancy new hurricane shutters (for some reason they've swelled since we had them installed last year, which explains why, ahem, they tell you to test your shutters at the beginning of hurricane season), cleaning out gutters, stockpiling water, and making sure anything that might blow around is tucked in tight. We're not evacuating, thank God. (I am sooo not in the mood for that.) But the city-wide buzz of anxiety makes it hard to settle down and do anything like, well, write.

At any rate, I've stockpiled everything I need to make it through the next few days...

  1. Lana wants to evacuate because if we lose electricity she'll have problems because of her health issues. we will wait until Monday evening to make a decision I guess though. Not looking forward to an evacuation.

  2. Yes, I can understand that. Sometimes it can take WEEKS for them to get the power restored. I recently bought a battery operated nebulizer for my asthma, just for hurricanes. Hopefully it will shift far enough west that you won't need to worry.

    Ms. Harris-
Just watched The Weather Channel update and feel for you and everyone else that was affected by Katrina. My heart goes out to all of you. Conditions out there continue to shift and change as well as the track (and cone), as I write. Everyone must be preparing for the worst, and hoping for the best. Understandably, everyones nerves are on edge. Keep us posted.......(another)sigh. Liked you stockpile (recognize some from Whole Foods)

  4. So sorry to hear you're facing this. Not good at all. But I must say, I like the inclusion of a bottle of Koonunga Hill with your emergency supplies. What a great idea! :-)

  8. LOgalin, I suspect everyone is freaking out more than they normally would, just because we all habitually freak out every 29 August even when the Gulf is clear. And yes, we're regulars at Whole Paycheck.

Rachel, I used to live just up the road from one of the Penfold vinyards in South Australia, so it's my go-to wine for comfort as well as taste.

Barbara, thank you. Sugar, salt, and alcohol; what else would I need? This morning Steve also bought me a couple of Dove chocolate bars!

Paz, thank you. At least this morning they're saying it should only hit as a Category 1.

Essex, we can already feel it--it's a creepy tingling that I guess comes from the fall in pressure. But I'm not seeing any unfamiliar shore birds fleeing the coast and marshes, so I'm taking that as a good sign. When we were packing the cars to evacuate for Katrina, the roofs were crowded with big, strange birds heading inland--that's when I knew we were going to get clobbered.

Thinking of you and everyone else down there and hoping for the best. May you NOT need too much of your stash (just some to take the edge off the waiting). Sabena

Just read that most of New Orleans has no power -- glad to see you have not only power but an internet connection and appropriate "supplies" :)

Steve, I tried to go to your blog and leave a comment, but I couldn't get past the guardian at the gate.

Mike, we lost our power for three painful days.

    Candace Ms. Proctor,
Relieved to hear that you, your family, and house came thru with minor damage. It is distressing to hear that parts of NOLA are affected a second time. Our hearts go out to all of you.
In the meantime, while waiting for "What Darkness Brings", I have started to read your earlier novels. "Night in Eden"(Amazon), your debut book, in short, took my breath away. Bryony and Hayden's love story was sensual, seductive, wildly romantic and loving in the Australian outback. The twist in plot that almost derailed their lives was climactic. I could not put the book down until the very end. There are passages marked that I will read and reread. Highly recommend to all your readers. Bryony and Hayden's love story will remain in my heart forever. Thank you so much for a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying read. I look forward to your other, earlier novels.

I have been browsing online greater than three hours as of
late, yet I never found any fascinating article
like yours. It's pretty price sufficient for me. In my opinion, if all webmasters and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the internet will probably be much more useful than ever before.

I know this if off topic but I'm looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is needed to get set up? I'm assuming having a blog like yours would
cost a pretty penny? I'm not very internet smart so I'm not 100% certain.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
