Galleys and Mountains and Mermaids, Oh My

So I was going to write a long post this week entitled something along the lines of, "Jamie: Why I Did It." But then the galleys for the mass-market edition of WHO BURIES THE DEAD landed on my doorstep, quickly followed by the ones for WHEN FALCONS FALL.

I love seeing galleys (page proofs) because it means the book is that much closer to going into production. But since I'm heading off to visit my sister in McCall, Idaho, next week, I've been scrambling to get them finished. (Yes,  poor Steve is staying home to take care of cats again.) I do wish they would warn me/coordinate with me on these things, but every author I know has the same story: galleys ALWAYS come at the worst possible time. It's one of those "rules."

(That's a picture of where I'm off to, by the way.) In other news, the audio version of WHY MERMAIDS SING is up here. There's no cover yet because  we're, um, working on it. The first version they sent was of a distant ship with a very in-your-face mermaid complete with prominent bellybutton and a shell bra. I kid you not. The next version was much better, different mermaid, but with very red lipstick on her mouth. I asked if they could cut her off at the chin. Still haven't heard back yet. But as of this writing, the audio book is available, just with a generic cover.

The one other thing I wanted to share with you is this incredible book filled with photos of old London that my long-suffering husband gave me for my birthday. It's pricey, but wonderful:

And yes, Sebastian and I are both Libras. One of those "write what you know" things.

  1. And aren't you the lucky girl? Keep Steve if he picks out books like that - it looks terrific. And if you get to McCall, shouldn't you come up to Spokane? Yes, a bit of a drive but I can hope!

The picture of Idaho looks good. It looks beautiful but scary. I went to America once and I liked it but I found everything just too big! I felt a bit lost, even the sun looked bigger in a way. I felt safer somehow when I got back to England, is this weird? I love watching films about America but from a safe distance.
The post-modern mermaid sounds awful, I'm so glad you challenged it. It must be awful for authors to have these terrible book covers foisted on them. I'm so looking forward to the next book, you are so unusual in comparison with many other American writers, you really seem to understand Britain and the British.

  3. Lynne, one of these days I should get back up there!

Susan, it is wide open, no doubt. And thank you; that is a real complement.

  4. C- i will say a prayer for a "normal" mermaid - yikes. Idaho looks like a great place to live. reminds me why i why want to get out of the city! and i agree a 100% with Susan - your knowledge and understanding of not only England but the English people makes believe i am reading a first hand account of something that happened and of people who existed. enjoy your trip! and good luck to Steve ;-) Best Ali

Susan's comment was really interesting. Living in Australia I am used to wide open spaces too. When I visited England it felt really strange, everything was so close together. Rather like looking at the world in miniature.

The forests in Europe were a big surprise too. They had so little undergrowth that you see way ahead. It felt very strange because in the Australian bush you can't see more than about 20 metres in front of you unless you are on a man made path. I really couldn't imagine the fairy-tale characters I had grown up reading about getting lost in a European forest. You can see the sun for a start.

Suzanne: I was interested in your comment. It did occur to me, as I wrote mine, that for somebody who came from a country of vast open spaces England might seem perhaps almost claustrophobic. Where I live in Lincolnshire there is much open land reclaimed from the fens, which has more open space of course and I would miss that if I moved back South again. Nothing on the scale of Australia of course. Speaking of Australia, my husband is at this moment watching Austalia v Wales in the rugby! Having said that, now that England has gone out of it he is actually supporting France! He says there is no way he will support Wales, Scotland or Ireland because they would never support England!

Susan, when I was in Europe their ideas of distance really amazed me. I met a man in Rome who was very put out because we didn't know his cousin in Cairns. "But he is a very important man," he said, with disbelief. Dad had to explain that Cairns is about 2000kms from Melbourne and we had never been there. In the end Dad said, "Well, you live in Europe. How many people do you know in Moscow?" to give him some perspective.

Suzanne: Yes, it's the same here with the difference between town and country. When my husband first moved from London to Peterborough, Cambs as a young man, he had people asking if he knew their relatives in London! Even within London people from South London hardly know anything about North or East London and vise versa. Yet in Alford the town I live near now in Lincolnshire, everybody knows everybody!
