Finished!

I've spent the past I-don't-know-how-many weeks rereading the entire Sebastian St. Cyr series and taking copious notes. And I'm FINALLY finished.

It was quite an experience, alternately fun, insightful, and (when I found mistakes) horrifying. The most hilarious error I discovered was one place where instead of "Mayfair" there was "Mayflower." Seriously! Apart from being a weird mindslip in the first place, how did that slide past my dozen or so rereadings, my editor, the copyeditor, and whatever minions are supposed to read the galleys after I go over them? Oh, oh, oh.

At any rate, the fat notebook you see in the photo above is the result of the last weeks' labors, all 100-plus pages of it. I even drew a family tree for Sebastian that stretches back 200 years (no,you can't see it!).

I'm now starting back to work on Where the Dead Lie. And one other thing I did last week was approve the new cover for #11, When Falcons Fall, due out in March of 2016. It's by the same illustrator as the last several books, and we have a new model who looks much more like my own personal vision of Sebastian. It'll be interesting to see if y'all agree. I've asked for permission to reveal the cover, so hopefully that will be coming through soon. Stay tuned.

Wow that is some accomplishment! i don't mean re-reading the series - i mean all those notes and a family tree. i would love to see it. looking forward to the new cover and the new face of Sebastian!! Mayflower huh - well it could be worse. it sounds the same. I's so excited about the new book - already! Yikes its going to be awhile. Best, Ali

  2. Ali, I'll admit the notes were a lot of work! There's a reason I never did this before. And I must admit I'm anxious to see this book come out myself; I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

  3. I can tell you exactly why those little "errors" got missed by everyone. We all get so engrossed in the story and characters that our brain rarely processes the individual "blips" as we read. I am usually a stickler for those things, Candy, and I can honestly say nothing ever caught my eye...and I've done proofing before.
I'm with Ali - we need that family tree - I always think they're great fun to read.

  4. I admit that in my reading I am much less likely to catch substitutions like "Mayflower" for "Mayfair" than typos/misspellings or, worst of all, grammatical errors. Typos and substitutions can be amusing, but grammatical errors make me rage around for days. That said, I can't remember ever finding a grammatical error in one of your books! I wonder if on your re-read of your own books you were able to notice and appreciate some of the things I love about them--the sense of London as a river city and of water as practically a character in the story, among others. Sometimes I wonder if that's your Katrina experience finding its way into the books. Thank you for writing with such texture, richness, and complexity. Can't wait to see the cover of the next one and the "new" Sebastian! Blessings, Melinda

  5. Lynne, I think I will post the family tree, once all secrets are revealed. It was a lot of fun to make.

RevMelinda, I did notice the ways in which the events of my own life these past 12 years bled into the books. There's a scene in WHERE SHADOWS DANCE, in which Sebastian goes to tell Hendon he's getting married and that, despite everything, he wants him at the wedding: I wrote that scene sitting beside my mother's bed at the hospice, knowing the end was near, and she died literally minutes after I set it aside. I couldn't read it without sobbing.

I can't remember seeing 'Mayflower' for 'Mayfair' in any of your books but maybe it was a Freudian slip! After all, people in America who can trace their ancestry back to being on the Mayflower seem to think of themselves as some kind of aristocracy!
I'm looking forward to seeing Sebastian as you visualise him. I think the problem with getting actors that might be right for possible film dramatisations, is that tall men are not, in real life, really very handsome. I think the 'tall dark and handsome' thing is really a myth. Smaller men have generally more even features. I read somewhere that it is a scientific fact that the taller we become, the less symmetrical our facial features are. It's certainly true in England, it seems to me most tall men, usually upper middle class types, have huge noses and big chins, not my type at all! As for most modern aristocrats, they usually have bright red faces and no chin to speak of!
A possible exception is in Scotland, I have seen some tall handsome Scots.

  7. Susan, I don't think I have any Mayflower ancestors, but then it's hard to say. A bunch of them were rather scary people who came out of the hills of Tennessee and North Carolina, and I'm not certain who went INTO those hills!

It's funny, but I don't think of six feet as tall. Six-five is tall to me, despite the fact that I am rather short. But I think I mentioned my grandfather and uncles were all very tall men. And I LOVE your description of modern aristocrats!

Wow, that is quite a job you tackled. I am really in awe about the family tree. I hope we get to see it some day.

I have been reading a series of books recently that I am thoroughly enjoying, but oh, the editing is appalling. I think somebody just went through it with spell check set on US English despite the fact that the first third is set in the UK, with some hilarious results. The one that really sticks in my mind is there was a character called Hardwick and it was constantly written as Hard wick. Slightly obscene connotations there. It really made me laugh on one hand but on the other I really felt for the author. She must have been horrified when she read the finished product. If it was me I would be ready to take a contract out on the editors.

Susan, your description of the upper classes nearly made me fall off my computer chair. LOL. It really reminded me of some of the chinless wonders you see playing upper class twits of the year in Midsommer Murders or the Agatha Christie movies.

Just passing through & catching up, still alive, still working, trying not to dwell too much on a recent reminder from Uncle Sam that we're almost old enough to collect Social Security.

What's a few slip-ups among millions of words? Think of them as challenges left for us.

Regarding the hard drive you lost ~ a year ago, your best bet is Kroll Ontrack if you still have the drive.

For backups, I'd suggest 2 or more USB drives, used alternately (I've had backup drives go bad, too :( ).

  10. Congratulations! And of course you're going to keep is updated *while* you're writing your books to avoid having to do anything similar again, aren't you?

I'm looking forward to the family tree. I often have to draw my own when I'm reading (not just your books) to keep the characters straight in my mind.

I, along with everyone else, can't wait to see the family tree. I'm assuming that is at least 8 years away, as I think there are about 8 books to go. Ah well. Also can't wait to see the new cover model which aligns more with you mental picture of Sebastian. It will be interesting to see how many of us agree or disagree with you. I too loved Susan's description - nailed it. Remind me again how tall you made Sebastian? Maybe you can share some of your other notes that you took (it is always fun to be reminded of fun facts). Hope you have a wonderful mother's day. Sabena

  12. Suzanne, was it a NY publisher? That sounds horrible.

Mike, I'm still a few years away! And I did already ditched the hard drive. My local guy was able to get quite a bit off it. Luckily, the biggest hit was to photos and music. It could have been so much worse.

  13. Helena, I actually did this for the first four or so books, then ran out of steam. And now I realize that even then I wasn't writing down as much as I should have been. As to keeping it up....

Savena, he's a little over six feet tall--I never specified beyond that. Hero is "almost as tall", probably about 5'!0" or so.

  14. amazing how things slip by. but inevitable. Congrats on getting this done

  15. Congrats on finishing! Now all you have to do is keep it up as you go. *wink*

I, too, can't wait to see Sebastian's family tree but I understand having to wait until all is revealed.

I love that you were writing Sebastian telling Hendon about his wedding as you sat next to your mom. I'm holding onto hope that Sebastian and Hendon are able to mend fences because the truth is, there is never enough time.

Looking forward to seeing the new cover. I hope you get the green light to share it soon. :)

Speaking of aristocrats, I just watched a documentary about the Duke of Wellington. I'll make an exception for him, I find his portraits very sexy, even given the hooked nose! Even in the one photograph of him as an old man he still had a distinguished look.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Suzanne1:40 AM

I agree Susan. I remember seeing Wellington's portrait in the British Portrait Gallery and I thought he was a bit of a dish.

Candy, the books I have been reading were published in paperback back in the early 90s by Simon & Shuster, but they have recently been republished as ebooks by another crowd from NY that I have never heard of before. Now that I am up to no.5 in the series they are done by S & S again and the standard is very good. But those early ones were just a hatchet job.

Suzanne: Yes, he was a great favourite with the ladies and had not only many lovers but also life long female friends.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Veronica, still waiting on the approval. It's so frustrating. I've never been able to understand why it takes so long. Their answer is "legalities."

Susan, given the way they go on and on about his nose, I've wondered if perhaps it was larger than it appears in portraits--the artists being kind?

Suzanne, they must be the author's backlist being put up by some small e-publisher. If I were the author, I'd be really angry. A good argument for doing it one's self.

His nose does not look out of proportion with his face in the one photograph that was taken of him in later life. There are several half profile portraits of him showing a large bony nose but he still looks an attractive man and was described as such by several women of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Suzanne9:44 PM

I agree Susan, having a big nose doesn't automatically mean unattractive. Look at Dick Van Dyke. He has one of the worst noses on TV but even in his 70s he was still a very good looking man.
