Run Free, Little Girl

We lost Scout last night.

She managed to hang on for four months after Banjo had his final, fatal seizure. We knew she was deteriorating, but her slide has always been more gradual than his. When we first rescued them, Scout could scamper around (sort of) and eat and drink on her own. But she'd lost that ability shortly before Banjo died, so we knew it was only a matter of time.
Still, losing her last night was unexpected and a bit of a shock. I went in to check on her before dinner and knew as soon as I saw her that she was in trouble. She died in Steve's arms shortly before midnight.
We rescued our "shaky kitties" just over a year ago, on my birthday. It's been a very tough, very draining, and very emotional twelve months, and now it's over.

Those kitties were so lucky to have found you both, and the life you were able to give them (albeit short) was very much appreciated, I am sure. What a wonderful thing you did.

  3. Rebecca, thank you. It has been hard in so many ways, but we've never had one moment of regret and would do it all over again.

MK, thank you. I'm feeling very battered today.

So sorry about your sad news. You can at least be sure that you gave your cats a good, happy and secure home for their last years and that they were well loved.

  7. Sometimes the best things in life find us. Scout and Banjo were loved and gave love in return. I so sorry for your loss.

  8. I echo Amy's sentiment. When these two adorable felines needed someone you and your husband stepped up with love, warmth, and generosity. There is grief, yes, but love, too.

  12. Oh, Candy...I don't know what to say. Maybe it was only a year but they got lots of love from you and Steve. That's the most important part.

  16. I am so sorry that you lost precious Scout. You and Steve gave her and Banjo a loving and safe home for the last year and she died in the arms of someone who loved her. What a privilege for you and Steve, to be there to mark the moment.

I just looked again at your beautiful photographs of your cats. The central one with them both on the bed is so lovely, it would be nice if you could get an artist to do a painting of it to keep on the wall to remind you of them.

  20. Thanks so much, everyone. Even though her condition was deteriorating to the point that I know it was best for her, it still hurts. Her life was so short--just 18 months. I watch Indie tearing around and think about all that she and Banjo missed.
